It’s been a tough start to the season for Dortmund fans, and quite rightly so. This time last year Die Schwarzgelb were top of pops and undefeated in eight games in the Bundesliga.

Lucien Favre’s new-look side, built on a mixture of youth, experience and a free-flowing philosophy saw Dortmund burst out of the gates ahead of rivals Bayern, which would see them undefeated almost up until Christmas.

How times have changed. Or have they really? Let’s discuss why Dortmund have a great chance of winning the title and how your wallet will be thanking you come May when they do.

The table doesn’t lie

As we all know, it didn’t exactly go according to plan last year, with Bayern pipping Dortmund to the post at the last gasp.

The way this season has started it feels like there’s still a heavy fog hanging over the Westfalenstadion, with the team struggling to nail down points on the Bundesliga board.

There is a silver lining though. The biggest contenders for the Bundesliga title, Bayern Munich, have also had a blip in form. Likewise, potential upstarts RB Leipzig have also kept a far from perfect record, leaving Dortmund just one point off top spot.

Why you should be backing Die Borussen

Despite a disappointing end to last season Borussia Dortmund have done something that’s not come easy in recent years. Not only did they manage to keep their squad intact, retaining their key players, but they also strengthened in vital areas.

More importantly, this squad has the vital experience of a proper title fight from just last season to learn from and to build on.

Given the current negativity foisted on Favre’s outfit, the media has pushed an agenda to make Dortmund look worse off than they really are. The good news? It’s boosted the odds to a massive 6/1 on Dortmund to win the title. It represents fantastic value for a team sitting just one point off the top spot and with one of the most complete squads in the country.

A much-needed boost

Although they endured a tough night at the hands of Inter Milan this week, a hard-fought victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach prior to that put a feather in the cap of a number players on the domestic front, not least captain Marco Reus and Thorgan Hazard.

Dortmund hammered the Gladbach goal with a total of 20 total attempts. After seeing two prospective goals disallowed and even more chances blocked in the area, a welcome 1-0 win chalked up three points, much to the relief of the Südtribune

The run-up to Christmas

The next match sees Dortmund travel the short distance across the Ruhr to meet bitter rivals Schalke in this year’s first Revierderby. It represents the first off a spate off fixtures in the run-up to Christmas where Der BVB need to ensure they break down teams to full to take maximum points.

An early November fixture against Bayern represents a standout challenge in a fixture list running up to the festive period that should be easily managed by a Dortmund side firing on all cylinders.
