Dortmund have a proud history of producing and developing some of the best attacking talent Europe has ever seen. From prolific hitmen to creative geniuses, BVB fans have been treated to a plethora of star forwards since the club’s inception.
Given the impact made by youngsters like Jordan Sancho, who, alongside Joao Felix have exceptionally bright futures ahead of them, we’ve been inspired to look back at some of the greatest forwards ever to play for the club:
Alfred Preissler
We kick off this list with an undisputed legend: Alfred Preissler, the German frontman who is also the club’s leading goalscorer of all time.
In over 250 games for the club, Preissler bagged a seriously impressive total of 174 goals. Quick with both feet, and deadly inside the box, he turned out for the club for over a decade and led Dortmund to two consecutive titles in 1956 and 1957.
Lothar Emmerich
Although Preissler will always be regarded as one of the club’s greatest ever strikers, no list like this would be complete without mentioning the wonderful and enigmatic Lothar Emmerich. During the course of his club career, he bagged 115 goals in just 183 appearances. During a nine-year stint at Dortmund in the 60’s the forward helped Dortmund win the European Cup Winners Cup in 1966, where he scored 14 goals during the competition.
Emmerich also won five caps for West Germany, all in 1966, as he helped fire his national team to the World Cup final where they lost out to England.
Marco Reus
Although more of attacking midfielder/wide-man as opposed to a traditional number 9 there’s no doubting the quality of this man: Marco Reus.
Reus started his career with fellow Bundesliga outfit Borussia Mönchengladbach before making the switch to Dortmund, his hometown club, in 2012.
During the Klopp era, he was given the platform to really shine and over the last seven years he has become an integral part of the side with his movement, vision and commitment propelling him to cult hero status.
