Nearly 350 appearances for Borussia Dortmund, the first Dortmund player to score 100+ goals and also register 100 assists for the club, the German club’s captain since 2018. Marco Reus has done all these for his boyhood club in the last few years, and he will continue to serve for his home team even if some other club offers him that some footballers can’t resist. Because his name is Marco Reus, he is one of the most loyal footballers globally.
At the weekend, when Dortmund faced Union Berlin in the league match, Reus scored a brace and became the 4th Borussia Dortmund player to reach 150+ goals in club history (151) after Alfred Preissler (175), Manfred Burgsmuller (158), and Michael Zorc (158).
We will not see this German footballer wearing another club’s shirt in his life while playing football. Because he has entirely dedicated himself to the club, he will be happy to serve the club even if they don’t win titles.
There is a trend that goes in Germany. All the talented footballers who come through the academy of Dortmund and then reach the first team move to Bayern Munich after a stage of development.
The primary examples are Robert Lewandowski, Mario Gotze and Mats Hummels. Two of them returned after a few years. But Marco Reus stayed when the club was suffering, even when Bayern Munich offered him more salary.
He was with the club through thick and thin. Reus joined Borussia Dortmund from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2012. Reus spent his youth career at Borussia Dortmund, prior to leaving for Rot Weiss Ahlen. He joined Borussia Monchengladbach in 2009 and had his most successful season in 2012, scoring 18 goals and providing 12 assists in the Bundesliga to help Borussia Monchengladbach secure a place in the following season’s UEFA Champions League.
At the end of that season, Reus returned to his hometown club Borussia Dortmund, helping the club reach the 2013 UEFA Champions League Final in his first season. With Dortmund, Reus won three DFL-Supercups – in 2013, 2014, and 2019, and the DFB-Pokal in 2017 and 2021, and he has scored over 150 goals for the club. He has been named Bundesliga Player of the Season on three occasions.
He was an integral part of the team that won two consecutive Bundesliga titles during Jurgen Klopp’s era.
He always had faced the question of moving away from Dortmund several times. His answer was always the same – ‘NO’. He does not care about players leaving or returning. As long he plays football, he will play for BVB.
With his contract set to expire at the end of the 2022/23 season, Reus has confirmed that he would like to sign an extension with Borussia Dortmund. he said: “As far as I’m concerned, BVB is my club, Dortmund is my hometown and I’d like to finish my career here.”
Marco Reus is an example for all the young footballers to show that money does not bring happiness all the time, but enjoying football does.
